Dos and Don'ts of Plumbing

If you live in San Diego, it’s essential to be aware of the dos and don’ts of plumbing to ensure that your home’s plumbing system is functioning correctly and efficiently. So, what are the dos and don’ts of plumbing?

Do List for Plumbing

DO:

Ensure you have the proper personnel when installing or changing your plumbing system. San Diego requires a licensed professional to perform all plumbing work.

Use high-quality piping and materials for your plumbing system. Cheap lines and materials may save you money in the short term, but they are more prone to leaks and other problems, which can be costly to fix in the long run.

Do:

Check the water pressure. Why? Because it can wear down faucets and shower valves, and if the pressure is too excessive can even cause pipe, angle stop, and water supply lines burst.

Especially if anything is over, say, 100 Psi. Is bad. Even over 80 Psi. is not good.

A pressure regulator should be installed or replaced if it is too high. Excessive water pressure can cause all types of leaks. Albeit you’re not a plumber, I get it. But checking the water pressure is pretty simple. No Problem. We check the Water Pressure for FREE.

Regularly maintain and clean your plumbing system. This includes cleaning your drains, replacing old pipes, and repairing leaks or other issues.

Especially Your Kitchen sink, because this drainage; line encounters all types of food waste and rarely ever wins the battle. No, on the serious side, it is recommended to clean every two years or so, depending on the age of the drain line. The older, maybe every year and a half or sooner. A newer line every 2 or 3 years.

Do:

Know where your main water shut-off valve is located in an emergency. This will allow you to quickly turn off the water supply to your home if a pipe burst or other issue occurs.

And also, know where your gas meter is located and how to turn it off. Maybe even watch a video or two on youtube for instructions on how to turn it off in case of an emergency.

Don't Do List for Plumbing

DON’T:

Don’t pour grease or oil down your drains. These substances can clog your pipes and create significant plumbing issues. Instead, dispose of grease and oil in a can or jar and throw them in the trash.

Don’t flush non-biodegradable items down your toilet. This includes baby wipes, feminine hygiene products, and paper towels. These items can clog your pipes and cause costly damage to your plumbing system.

Don’t just hire any plumber. Check that they are licensed Professionals and have the knowledge and experience to accomplish the plumbing repair; you can even go to the California State Contractors Board online and check their contractor’s license to see if they have any complaints.

Use chemical drain cleaners sparingly. These products can corrode your pipes, damage rubber washers, and cause long-term damage. Instead, try using a plunger, a homemade baking soda, and a vinegar solution to unclog your drains.
