Locating Water Leaks
Is your water bill excessive? Check out the following to get the gist of locating a leak or, at the very least, try to get an idea of the situation. I have Located many water leaks. MANY. And they have been the culprit of high water bills.
I WILL MENTION A FEW TECHNIQUES FOR LOCATING A LEAK.
I have been doing San Diego Plumbing Repair for several years. I have found (water) Leaks, in attics, underneath houses (within crawl spaces, this one is pretty obvious, climb underneath), in walls, slab leaks, bathroom fixture leaks, outside in the yard, etc.
The following is some FYI on water leaks and possible solutions.
The most important thing is to use common sense and look for a water spot; if it’s in the wall, you must remove the drywall and follow the leak to see where it’s coming from.
If you like, we can try to pin point the leak. I have located many leaks over the years.
Locating a Hidden Leak(s)
Try the following:
The most unlikely place most people do not look for is the toilet.
(Toilet Tank Leaks) Lift up the toilet tank lid and see if the water is running.
An affordable plumbing professional is always recommended to repair the toilet or other leaks to do it right the first time.
If there is a leak in the ceiling that is probably over the toilet, flush the toilet a couple of times to see if you locate the leak. If there is a bathroom directly over the leak, there is a good chance that the leak is coming from somewhere in that upstairs bathroom.
It could be the shower valve. Sometimes leaks can even be caused when someone takes a shower and steps out of the shower.
Sometimes it could be the walls in the shower. Sometimes the Grout begins to disintegrate, thus allowing water to pass through. If you can access the back wall and drywall, open it up to see where the leak is.
Other times, it’s the plumbing that causes a leak. The Piping corrodes and causes a leak. If you have a raised foundation, check underneath the house or building to see if there is any water buildup or if you see a water leak.
I also have an article on Locating a Slab Leak, in which I have located a couple of hundred slab leaks by just feeling the floor for Hot Spots, etc.
Don’t be swayed by unscrupulous contractors who will tell you that all the plumbing must be changed. Why? Well, sometimes, all that is needed is changing a certain section depending on the age of the plumbing, etc.
But I always like to tell the TRUTH. And give my customers my honest opinion.
Now that you’ve located the leak, what’s next?
It is very important to use the appropriate materials to do a plumbing repair, tools, and solder with skills and experience, even though they may seem like common problems in a house, etc.
I’ve seen all kinds of work. (From handyman to general contractors, etc.) but unfortunately, I see this type of work regularly because I have had to repair or replace work many a time (many, many times) since doing San Diego Plumbing Repair Service for 40+ years (American Plumbing Co.)

In 1984, I worked with Jack, a Master Plumber
I worked in 1983 as a handyman or in plumbing maintenance then.
And In 1984, I worked with Jack, a Master Plumber, on H Street in Chula Vista. After Working with Jack, I was Blessed by always having work in the plumbing field.
We worked in the New homes in East Lake. You could see dirt a COUPLE of blocks past Eastlake! And they were building the 125. Freeway. Now there are new homes for miles.
When Eastlake, San Diego, was in its second year of building New Homes around 1985. And the (I)125 was “being built” (FREEWAY). I worked there for a little more than a year and a half. And we also worked on a 50-unit apartment building.
Then Later, I installed NEW PLUMBING (New Construction)
Then later, I was installing NEW PLUMBING from where there was nothing before. I would use blueprints for the New Installations.
I worked at Sharp Rees Medical Center on Third Avenue, where I had several guys helping me to Install all the NEW Drainage piping to the Chula Vista Medical center.
Then I worked at several hotels like La Quinta Hotel, off 805 and E Street, and other Hotels off the 163 freeway and North County. Then at the Coronado Hotel for about two months, they remodeled one of the buildings and added on in the late 1980s.
I have worked in several motels, hotels, 1 Shopping Center, Custom Homes, Commercial Buildings, etc.
