What are the most common causes of clogged drains

The most common causes of clogged drains in San Diego are foreign objects, grease, oil buildup, tree roots, and mineral deposits—food waste buildup for kitchen sinks.

Foreign Objects: Foreign objects such as hair, food waste, and small toys can easily get stuck in the pipes and cause a clog. This is especially common in bathroom sinks and showers. To prevent this, using a drain cover in the sink or shower is important to catch any debris before it goes down.

What are some tips for preventing clogged drains?

1. Use strainers in all your drains: Strainers are a great way to prevent clogs from forming. They are inexpensive and easy to install and can catch hair, food waste, and other debris that can cause clogs.

2. Don’t pour grease down the drain: Grease is one of the most common causes of clogged drains. It can solidify the pipping and create a blockage.

3. In the main drain line, only use toilet paper; anything else is not biodegradable (will not readily dissolve.)  I have seen where it says on the wrapper that it is flushable.

Even though it says on their flushable baby wipes, if you place toilet paper in the toilet, it will begin to disintegrate. Except for baby wipes, paper towels, etc. Will not. Best to place it in the trash.

What are the signs that my drains need to be cleaned?

If you are experiencing any of the following issues, you likely need a professional sewer cleaning service:

Slow Drains: If your plumbing lines are draining more slowly than usual, this could signify a pipe blockage. A professional plumbing cleaning service can help clear blockages and restore your plumbing to normal functioning.

If your sink, bathtub, or shower takes longer than usual, it could indicate that your drainage line needs to be cleaned. This is usually caused by a buildup of debris and grime blocking the pipes.

2. Foul Odors – If you notice a foul smell in your bathroom, it could indicate that your plumbing needs to be cleaned.

What is the best way to clean my drains?

The best way to clean your drains depends on the drainage and blockage types. For general maintenance.

I will pour Ajax slowly into the line while running hot water (for instance, on a kitchen sink.)

Pouring a cup of baking soda down the drainage, followed by a cup of white vinegar, is recommended.

Allow the mixture to sit for several minutes, then flush the line with hot water.

This will help to break up any grease or soap scum that may have built up in the pipes.

What are some common mistakes people make when cleaning their drains?

1. Not using the right tools for any plumbing repair: One of the most common mistakes people make when cleaning their drains is not using the right tools.

It is important to use the right tools for the job to ensure it is done correctly and safely. For example, using a plunger to unclog a sink or bathtub drain is not always the best option, as it can cause further buildup to the pipes.

What are the consequences of not cleaning my drains?

Failure to maintain healthy drains has severe immediate and long-term repercussions. For one thing, major blockages could occur, which would be inefficient and unhealthy, too!

First, you risk major blockages along your drainage lines, which would eventually result in a major health risk resulting in blocked pipes, which would be unhealthful as well.
Clogs can lead to foul odors permeating your home and slow drainage that is unpleasant and inconvenient.

How often should I have my drains cleaned?

The frequency of drain cleaning depends on several factors, including the type of plumbing line. The amount of use and the persons using the plumbing. It is recommended to have the kitchen line cleaned at least every 1 1/2 to 3 years. This is because kitchen lines are exposed to grease, food, and other debris that can build up and cause blockages.

What about garbage disposals? Here’s my take on garbage disposals. I believe it does shred the food. But it will only build up in the kitchen drain line and eventually make the inside diameter of the piping smaller. So I believe if you use the garbage less, I believe it is better.

And if there is no usage of basket strainers, this will only exacerbate the problem; that is why it is important always to try to clean the plates and throw the food in the trash, etc. Otherwise, it might need more frequent cleaning. If you notice a decreased water flow or an unpleasant odor from the kitchen sink, it might be time to have it cleaned.

What are some common myths about unclogging a drain?

1. Myth: Drain cleaning is a DIY job.

Reality: Unclogging plumbing is a complex job that requires specialized tools and knowledge.

Attempting to clean your plumbing lines can cause more damage to your pipes and lead to costly repairs. It’s best to leave the plumbing to the professionals.

2. Myth: Chemical cleaners are the best way to clean a stopped line.

Common Drain Problems

Kitchen sinks tend to get more buildup. And have more clogs because the Food build-up may clog the line more often. It is recommended to clean an older line twice when clearing. I would say start doing this maybe after 30 years. But then it depends on how people care for the plumbing system.

A Kitchen sink may have issues more often, especially if you have a sluggish line. Affordable drainage service. Drain pipe repair and replacement.

See pictures of the build-up on the Sewer  Line Repair Services page

This will usually occur after several years—reasonable, fair services.

When they stop up, bathroom sinks are somewhat challenging because, most of the time, they do not have cleanout access.

A main sewer line stoppage. Is Always best to have cleanout access. Blocked line or Stooped up? Or if you have frequent clogs? What is best to install is what is called a two-way cleanout.

Toilet paper is the only thing that should be used down a Toilet or the Main. Toilet paper will dissolve. Baby wipes and kitchen towels, etc., will not.

For A Fair and Honest Free Estimate or any plumbing needs. Call Now! It is best to use a toilet auger for a clogged toilet.

It is not recommended to use Harsh Chemicals if you have tree roots. You can end up having to do costly repairs that were not necessary. I have seen The Harsh chemical destroy the cast iron piping. And a new installation of the drain pipe was needed.

Without a cleanout, it may mean more drainage problems. And because it is more difficult to remove the toilet and causes a mess and or going through the roof.

How To Unclog A Bathtub Drain line.

Use a 1/4 inch cable snake for the bathtub (slowly feeding cable threw Clean out. Till the line clears) for the Bathroom sink, either 1/4 inch (or 1/2 inch cable through vent), run cable threw drain on the bathroom sink.

A Laundry sink is the same as a kitchen; run cable through a clean-out.

Very Important to use a large (main line cable) only on a large line 3″ or 4″. If used on a small line, that may destroy some piping. ( Pipe Breakage) so use the right size cable when clearing a line.

I will Explain on How to Unclog Your Bathtub Drain “FAST” In 3 Minutes

In the Video, I will go through How to Unclog a Bathtub drain.

I will Reveal a Sneaky method for unclogging a Kitchen sink

P.S. It is A Sneaky Method to unclog a kitchen sink. Attach a blow bag (Any Home Depot should carry one, which costs around 25.00 bucks) to the end of the water hose. I have unstopped many a drain in my 40+ years as a plumbing contractor without ever using a machine.

You stick the blow bag attached to the hose down through the cleanout; a place usually has a plug that you unscrew to access the drain outside the kitchen.

VERY Important Check inside the house for water that does not come out through another plumbing fixture or exit somewhere else. Watch out for overflow of the plumbing fixtures when using the hose and blow bag trick.
