What are the signs that a water heater needs replacing?

My response:

Ok, Mr. Conniebi Vensats. Here is a small list of when it would be recommended to replace the water heater. And or repair the problem.

The Water Heater is not staying lit. Otherwise, it doesn’t work properly like it used to. And you have to relight the water heater often. Also, check to see if it still is under warranty. Usually 6-12 years warranty.

The Water heater will not stay lit. And it is older than say about ten years.

Repairing it may not be the best choice since life expectancy is so close.

A Very Important factor. Water heater life expectancy is usually around 10–15 years, depends on the Brand, and if the water heater is not turned all the way up on scalding hot, which causes the water heater to wear out faster.

Checking for Water Heater Leaks Before Replacing it.

If You see a leak from the base of the water heater? And you check to see that it is not coming from somewhere else like:

The Temperature and pressure relief valve is a major indicator that the water pressure may be too high. And you need to check to see if the water pressure is around 65 lbs.

You can check with a water pressure test gauge 10.00 at the Home Depot if it is over 80 lbs. I usually change the pressure regulator. If there is one or install one if there is none.

Also, Check that the leak is not coming from the bibb on the side of the water heater.

Check the Top of the water heater for any leak coming from the connection and trailing downward.

And Check the water heater itself if the leak is coming from inside?

Now if the water heater is older than the warranty, say it has a 6-year basic warranty. And it is 10+ years old. I would say to replace it if say the igniter switch mechanism is not staying lit and causing the pilot light to turn off. If it is older I would just say replace it.

But let’s say there is a leak in one of the former places like the Temperature and relief valve, Bibb, or a Connection to the water heater. Then if the water heater is installed properly just fix the leak.

It is always recommended to get a professional to do the work.
