When To Replace a Kitchen, Bathroom Sink Faucet?
Question posted on The Quora Platform.
Why does my faucet make a loud thunk and stop flowing when I turn it on high?
My Response:
When you Hear the Water Pressure. It Affects The Lifetime of a Plumbing Fixture.
The faucet will not last very long; by that, I mean the cartridge is probably not working properly. And will fail soon by just completely failing to work properly.
So you may be looking at replacing the FAUCET SOON, and the water supply lines because these have a rubber at the end and usually become smashed and are in need of replacement also, check the water stops underneath the sink to see if they still are working.
How About The Water Stops: So if you can turn off the Water Pressure in case of an emergency to the Plumbing Fixture.
When Changing Out The Kitchen Sink Faucet. Check The Water Stops to Make sure that they work. It is Always Recommended to Change The Water Stops if they are not in working order.
The Water Connections is one thing I Always Change. (I Always Purchase Stainless Steel, usually from Home Depot. Around 9.00 apiece.)
Anyways The reasoning behind changing the water lines.
The Water Lines have a Rubber Cone Washer that gets compressed when installed?
Also, try to get a Good Faucet. I would choose a Delta Kitchen Faucet (This is a Good One). Or also, a Moen or Price Pfister are good Kitchen Sink Faucets. The Cost well last week it Said for a Standard Delta Kitchen Sink Faucet was around 89.00. And a Moen Standard Kitchen Sink Faucet was 89.00.
Although they may be a little more Pricey than with a Standard or Generic Brand, I have seen a lot of Faucets that were very inexpensive and would need to be replaced within a few months.
Excessive Water Pressure can Affect the Kitchen Faucet.
Also, check the Water Pressure coming into your house because this may be the thing that Possibly caused it.
Water Hammer is probably the problem, exactly what you read into the words. When water travels under high pressure and suddenly stops (You turn off the faucet). It will cause vibration or motion of the pipe.
When the Water Pressure is too HIGH, this may cause excessive wear and tear on your “FAUCET”, toilet valve, or shower valve,or even may cause a leak to occur because of the Pressure (You ever hear about floods happening in the home?)
CHECK your Water Pressure by purchasing a water Pressure test gauge (Costs about $10.00 at the Home Depot).
You screw the test gauge onto the hose bibb, try to have counterclockwise pressure. If you decide to do this so as to hold the pipe from twisting on the Hose Bibb. obviously, the Test has to be after the pressure regulator.
Finding a Local Plumber to Check The Water Pressure.
Or type into Google search box Plumber Near Me. So a Professional Checks out the Water Pressure.
If your water pressure is around 65 lbs, then it should be okay; if it’s more, then you may need a new pressure regulator.
I usually think that if the pressure is over say 80lbs, then I would think about installing a pressure regulator.
Another thing that it could be is that (Water Hammer) the pipe in the walls are not strapped or secured properly.
All you would have to do is place a strap, if it’s accessible underneath the house, on the piping or open up the wall and strap the piping.
The other option would be to put an air chamber or a Water Hammer Arrestor.
I would start by checking the water pressure.
